God and Goddess of the Week

NEMESIS ; Goddess of Justice, Revenge, Retribution and Punishment. She is also in the Roman Pantheon. She is responsible for the transport of souls of the guilty to Tartarus. She is symbolized sometimes by the fabulous winged griffon.

PAN : God of Wilderness, Nature , Pastures and Shepherds. He is the personification of untamed and undisciplined procreation in Nature.
Good Evening Folks ! Well, better late than never, I suppose. :)
I do apologize for this getting up so late, but I've been rather tied up. I wish I had been tied up in a "fun kind of way" , but that hasn't been the case. lol. Mostly WORK , you know .. of the domestic kind. Anyway, I'm here now. We are still going through the Greek Pantheon. I am running out of MAJOR Gods and Goddesses in the Greek Pantheon and feel it only appropriate to march on to the Roman one after this. We shall see.
All CUPWA students ; You will receive extra credits for any research done on any one of the Gods or Goddesses of the Week. Please talk to Willow concerning this if you have any questions. Any discussion about any of the Gods or Goddesses can be posted on the facebook fan page under the Discussion tab. Just place the name of the God or Goddess in the subject line.
All of you have a grand week !

Container Gardening

Container Gardening
By Willow Forrestall

There are many websites and books about this subject. There is a lot of vast knowledge and personal experience on how to go about this. The basics are simple and anyone can have a container garden anywhere or spot that gets plenty of sun light.

Your first task is Light charting, its the same for anyone who breaks ground for Garden beds, you should also do this for your container gardens. Certain Plants need full light while others can survive in partial shade to full shade. So this is how I chart my  Natural light flow for indoors and outdoors.

I first get a sketch pad and sketch the area I plan to use. Even if its a room. On the next morning I start charting where the sun light hits, I go into the area every hour and check the Light fall. Indoors you can track it by the way it falls into the windows. Porches are slightly different especially if they have a roof.

After you have gotten your sun tracking done the next step is planning what you want to grow and in what to grow them in. You can use almost anything as a container from old metal watering cans to Old wheel barrow's. You can construct  flower boxes or buy big pots. I like to use the Big plastic Buckets from Home depot. The ones with rope handles. They do excellent for big plants or several in it. Like a tomato plant with calendar and marigolds (they are companion plants that love each other). What ever you use make sure that it has proper holes for draining. In some you might have to drill holes on the bottom.

Soil and layers in your containers: Many start with a gravel of some sort, may it come from your yard or you might have to purchase some. Or you can go to a friends place and ask them if they have some to spare ;) The gravel or stones in the bottom of the container helps with drainage. You don't want too much at the bottom of the container. Depending on how deep your container will determine how much to put in. I eyeball it but you should consider for shallow containers about an inch or slightly less. For big deep ones you want anywhere from 3-4 inches maybe more if its 5 gal or bigger.
My soil is my compost material, if you don't have compost material yet then you will have to get the following and this is my potting mix that never fails: Peat moss make sure it is the type that does not have fertilizer added, Earth grow topsoil compost material. They have two brands and I use booth to make my mix as the year goes by it breaks down and becomes a rich soil. Mix all together to make your mix. add it to the pots.

Plants: So many different veggies and herbs and fruits that can be grown in containers.  Many do seed clubs. Seed clubs is simple its a group of friends and seed share. Say you have carrots, broccoli and rosemary, while your friends have something you might want. So how it works is if you have a group of four including yourself, you would devoid up your seeds into four groups. I use small ziplock bags then take a permeant marker and write the seed name on it. I also use my comps printing program and write up the seed info on those free seed envelopes and print them out. After glueing the envelope together i slide the little ziplock bag into it and then write the persons name on it. This is great for those who do not have a lot of room and do not need so much seeds. Some seed packets have loads of seeds and when your tight for space you end up not planting all of it. Almost any plant can be grown in a container, I have seen folks do watermelons to other vine type plants in containers. They train the vines on trellises and grow them vertical to help save space. Imagination and thought is the biggest tools you will need for this.

Now some links for you:

Make sure you check your local agricultural laws on the types of plants that are not allowed. Each state and country have different restrictions.

Happy Planting and getting your green thumb!

ALCHEMY

ALCHEMY

Well, some believe the word alchemy comes from the Greek "cheo" meaning "I pour" or "I cast", especially since alchemy has alot to do with working with metals. Others believe it comes from the Egyptian "Khem", which means "the black land" and believe that this is where alchemy originated. Later the Arabic "al" was added to it to make the word "alkhemy". Of course as the science progressed (which is also called pseudoscience) , the Arabic article "al" was dropped and the word became "chemistry". So in essence, Alchemy is the early history of chemistry. There was also an Egyptian alchemist by the name of "Chemes" and so some believe the word "alchemy" came from his name. He had written a book about his experiments of how he tried to change base metals into gold. Irregardless of the word's origin, it is certain that the practice of alchemy had its beginnings in the Hellenistic cultures of Alexandria, Egypt. In fact, Alexandria at that time was known to be the "learning center of the world". Alchemy is a *blending* of Egyptian technology, Greek philosophy and Middle Eastern mysticism. Some of the first alchemists were metal workers who prepared precious metals for the Nobles. But, they also learned how to *substitute* some of these precious metals into cheaper items for the less fortunate and/or the less affluent. Of course, just like today, the cheaper substitutes are made to *look like* the more precious ones. (i.e. ; cubic zirconia vs. diamonds). And, it didn't take long for the idea that it might be possible to actually produce the precious metals themselves. This idea was backed by Aristotle's theory that there is a "prime matter" that is the base for all substances. Astrology then added the concept that the greater outer world of planets and stars reflected the inner world of human beings.(i.e.; macrocosm/microcosm). It was believed that under the appropriate astrological influence, it would be possible to change one metal into another, for instance ; lead into gold. Just like in the same way human beings perfected the cycles of death and rebirth , so should the metals be able to be perfect and grow from one form to another higher form. The "Philosopher's Stone" as it was called , was a term given to a particular stone that could be a catalyst to "transform metals and other raw materials into gold". Even though it was referred to as a stone, it was not actually a stone because it could be as simple as a combination of fire and water or *other* unlikely mixtures. So, alchemy became known as the passing of substances through a series of chemical processes. When these "workings" were done, they recorded the processes with symbols to protect the recipes from "dabblers and un-initiated" and to protect the alchemists from the Church accusing them of heresy. The metals were symbolized by astrological signs and these were for controlling the body and sometimes the components were combined with Greek and Roman myths or the Deities. It seemed the more the alchemists tried to hide and protect the results of their experiments, the more obtruse and confusing it became of what they actually did and said. When they would write out their actions with words, the would use language like "when we marry the crowned king with the red daughter , she will conceive a son in the gentle fire ... the dragon shuns the light of the sun and our dead son shall live. The king comes forth from the fire and rejoices in the marriage." Now how in the world .. could someone *decipher* what is being said here? Difficult, eh? lol.
Nonetheless, The Thrice Great Hermes has been described as an earthly incarnation of the Egyptian God Thoth and as an Egyptian Priest or Pharaoh , who taught all of the Egpytians their magic. He is credited for having written several thousand books, including THE EMERALD TABLET, which contained all of the Hermetic teachings , the Thirteen Precepts , including the fundamental principles for the GRAND ARCANUM , or "THE GREAT SECRET". There are many references to the Emerald Tablet in alchemical writings.
Alchemy is a practice that takes great research and study as well as patience. An alchemist can use different instruments, using weights and measurements, using the Seasons, symbols and animals to combine all sorts of materials such as gold, silver , aluminum to arsenic and eggshells to manure and wood, put it through a process for a result and/or an outcome. Many magicians use alchemy and is something one must be very careful with and know what it is they are after, what result it is they are wanting .. before every doing it!

Have a wonderful day and a great "rest of the week" !

Blessed Be,
Rain Dove
